The Queen’s Green Canopy
The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) is a unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 which invites people from across the United Kingdom to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”. With a focus on planting sustainably, the QGC will encourage planting of trees to create a legacy in honour of The Queen’s leadership of the Nation, which will benefit future generations.
The Parish Council has been successful in bidding for a free community tree pack of 105 Wild Wood saplings, kindly provided by the Woodland Trust. This will be delivered between 28th February and 18th March.
The pack contains a mixture of Downy birch, Hawthorn, Crab apple, Hazel, Goat willow and Holly trees. These hardy native species can tolerate exposed sites and help dry up areas where water collects easily. The estimated full-grown height of each species is: Downy birch: 30 m, Hawthorn: 15m, Crab apple: 7-9m, Hazel: +10m, Goat willow: 6-10 m and Holly: 15m.
These trees are cell-grown saplings, ranging from approximately 15cm-60cm in height. Cell grown trees can be planted all year round in most situations if they are given the correct care. The Woodland Trust asks that we be aware that depending upon the time of year we receive our saplings (particularly early spring) they may not look very perky upon arrival and not to worry as once they been planted, they should pick up quickly.
Every sapling the Woodland Trust provides is UK and Ireland sourced and grown to minimise the risk of importing and spreading tree pests and diseases. Seeds are collected and stored in the UK and Ireland, and they are all coded and batched so that saplings may be tracked.
The Parish Council would like to distribute these saplings to the residents of Keevil.
If you would like to plant one or more trees in your garden, please email Alex Goodwin at firstname.lastname@example.org and indicate the maximum number of trees you could accommodate. Should there be more requests than saplings a ballot will be held.
You will be able to add your Jubilee tree to The Queen’s Green Canopy map. Her Majesty and The Prince of Wales planted the first Jubilee tree in the grounds of Windsor Castle in March, to mark the launch of the QGC. Alongside this, we intend to create a commemorative village map of the trees planted for the QGC and have it displayed in the Village Hall.
